Digital Brand Strategy for an Independent Handmade Brand

A strategy for evolving a small handmade business from an aesthetically appealing Instagram product into a more distinctive brand built around authentic storytelling, emotional value and a consistent digital identity.

Context, Challenge and Audience

The project began with an analysis of a niche category where visual appeal is essential, but rarely enough to create meaningful differentiation.

context

Penny operates in a category where customers are not simply buying an accessory. They are choosing something personal, thoughtfully made and suitable as either a meaningful gift or a small gesture for themselves.

However, the category has low barriers to entry. A new competitor can begin from home with limited investment, basic production equipment and an Instagram profile. As a result, attractive products and polished photography quickly become category expectations rather than distinctive advantages.

challenge

How could Penny stand out in a saturated handmade category without relying only on attractive product photography?

The brand already had two valuable assets: an authentic product and a family story rooted in the relationship between a granddaughter and her grandmother. The challenge was that this story was not being used consistently, while the communication remained focused primarily on the products’ appearance.

The six-month proposal set targets of 15% growth in online sales, a 20% increase in Instagram engagement, and storytelling elements in at least 25% of published content.

audience

Women aged 22-35, primarily living in larger Bulgarian cities and actively using Instagram for inspiration and product discovery. They value aesthetics, authenticity, local brands, limited products and purchases that feel more personal than mass-produced alternatives.

INSIGHT: A beautiful product may catch my attention, but knowing who made it and what it represents is what makes it feel worth choosing, gifting and sharing.

not just beautiful. meaningful.

Strategic Direction and Core Message

The strategic direction was to shift the focus from Penny as a producer of attractive accessories to Penny as a brand whose products carry stories, care and personal meaning.

CORE MESSAGE

Stories held in the smallest details.

The message brings together the handmade process, the family behind the brand and the idea that each product can become a meaningful gift or personal choice.

BRAND ROLE

To offer a small, personal and aesthetically considered alternative to mass-produced accessories - one that makes everyday objects feel more thoughtful and distinctive.

TONE OF VOICE

Warm, friendly, sincere and visually gentle, without aggressive sales language or exaggerated claims.

STORYTELLING FOCUS

The communication would develop three recurring storylines: the granddaughter-and-grandmother origin story, the making process and the personal stories connected to customers’ products.

COMMUNICATION TERRITORY

Small details, personal stories, handmade value, thoughtful gifting, limited production and more conscious choices.

Digital Ecosystem and Proposed Solution

The proposed solution connects storytelling, social content, influencer partnerships, UGC and the website within one consistent digital system. Each channel has a specific role, while all touchpoints reinforce the same message, tone and visual identity.

Instagram

The primary channel for developing the brand identity through product content, behind-the-scenes storytelling, influencer collaborations and ongoing audience interaction.

TikTok

A supporting short-form video channel that extends the reach of Instagram Reels to a younger audience without requiring a separate content-production stream.

Pinterest

A discovery and inspiration channel that gives visual content a longer lifespan and helps position Penny as a source of aesthetic and gifting ideas.

influencers and UGC

Micro- and nano-influencers place the products in authentic lifestyle situations rather than delivering direct sales messages. UGC provides additional social proof while helping the brand build trust, closeness and a sense of community.

ACTIVATION: YOUR STORY IN THE SMALL DETAILS

Customers share a photo or video featuring a Penny product, add the personal story behind it and tag the brand. Selected entries become part of Penny’s storytelling content, turning customers from passive buyers into contributors to the wider brand narrative.

The winner is invited to participate in developing a future collection by helping select its fabric, colour palette and details. The reward reinforces the strategy by offering involvement and emotional value rather than a conventional material prize.

My Role

This was a three-person university project developed with Polina Drumeva and Selin Mehmed. I contributed to the analysis of the brand, audience and existing digital presence, as well as to the development of the strategic direction.

My focus was exploring how a resource-constrained handmade brand could use its authentic family story, limited production capacity and existing social media behaviour as strategic assets. I helped translate these elements into a clearer message, a more consistent content direction and a connected digital channel system.
